Question

Pediatric Dentistry FAQs – Expert Answers for Parents

Common questions about your child's dental health and first visits.

When should my child visit the dentist for the first time?
The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends the first dental visit by age 1 or within 6 months of the first tooth erupting. This "happy visit" helps catch early issues, educates parents on cleaning baby teeth, and establishes a dental home so your child grows up without fear of the dentist. Early prevention is key to a lifetime of healthy smiles!
My child is afraid of the dentist. How do you handle anxiety?
We specialize in anxious children! Our lady dentists use a "Tell-Show-Do" technique: we tell them what we'll do in simple words, show them the tool on a finger, and then do the procedure. We have a kid-friendly environment, gentle touch, and plenty of praise. We never force treatment. For severe anxiety, we offer conscious sedation options. Most kids leave our clinic smiling and high-fiving!
Why fix baby teeth if they fall out anyway?
Baby teeth are critical! They hold space for permanent teeth, help in speech development, and are essential for proper chewing/nutrition. If a baby tooth is lost too early due to decay, permanent teeth can drift, causing severe crowding and need for braces later. Untreated decay can also cause pain and serious infection affecting the developing adult tooth underneath. Healthy baby teeth = healthy adult teeth!
How can I prevent cavities in my child's teeth?
Prevention starts at home! 1) Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste (rice-grain amount for under 3, pea-sized for 3+). 2) Floss once daily as soon as two teeth touch. 3) Limit sugary snacks and sticky foods. 4) Don't put baby to bed with a bottle of milk/juice. 5) Visit us every 6 months for checkups and fluoride treatments. We also recommend dental sealants for molars to block cavities!
Are dental X-rays safe for children?
Yes, modern digital X-rays are extremely safe. They use 90% less radiation than traditional films. The amount of radiation from a dental X-ray is less than what you get from a short airplane flight or a day in the sun. We only take X-rays when necessary to see between teeth or check bone development. We always use lead aprons and thyroid collars for extra protection.
What should I do in a dental emergency (knocked-out tooth)?
Stay calm! If a permanent tooth is knocked out: Find the tooth, hold it by the crown (white part), rinse gently with water (don't scrub root), try to put it back in the socket, or keep it in milk/saliva. Come to us IMMEDIATELY (within 30-60 mins) to save the tooth. If a baby tooth is knocked out, DO NOT put it back (it can damage the adult tooth). Apply pressure to stop bleeding and call us.
